Dug wells In Thar
Thar is chronically a backward and poor area. Water shortage is a major problem of the area. More than 70% of Tharparkar’s population has no access to safe drinking water. In Tharparkar, dug-wells have been found to be the only sustainable source of groundwater. During a normal day, villagers spend around four to six hours on average to fetch four to five pots (50 to 60 litres) of water from dug-wells, situated far and wide.
The social life of villagers is also restricted due to lack of adequate water. This especially affects women, who are responsible for carrying water. Young children often have to forgo education due to responsibility of fetching water.
Embarking upon this emergent need of Drinking water, the Global Environmental Management
Services has started to provide/dig wells in Goths (villages) of Tharparkar where there are no wells under umbrella of its CSR activities. This project will go a long way in improving the socioeconomic conditions of the people of tharparkar in general and women and children in particular, Due to scarcity of water and non-existence of water resources in their own Goths (villages) the women and children have to travel long distances daily to fetch water from far flung areas.
Thar Plantation
The Thar Desert in Sindh province contains 175 billion tons of lignite coal – one of the largest untapped coal deposits in the world. Thar Desert is one of the most populated deserts in the world – home to world heritages sites and endangered species. Most of the 1.6 million people who live in the Thar Desert region live in poverty and are highly vulnerable to extreme weather events that are the result of climate change. With an aim to contribute towards combating desertification and drought. Global Environmental Management Services (GEMS) started plantation campaign with first phase of 50 Thousands indigenous plants.
In order to meet environmental standards, it was decided by GEMS officials that earlier this year company will plant 50 thousand trees. Greener and clean environment would ensure development on sustainable basis as steps to promote greenery would not only safeguard health of local people but they would also bring reduction in food scarcity in region.
Food Distribution
Hunger has continued to claim lives in Thar as children and women keep on suffering from deprivation of food and water. Adequate relief activities in this region continue to remain suspended due to various reasons. To save lives and prevent catastrophes. It could do this through boosting the food intake of the people in the Thar region by providing food supplements and by offering vaccinations to shield the poor from the consequences of immune suppression due to malnourishment. Also important are the provision of clean drinking water in the area to prevent diseases such as cholera and provision of better health infrastructure in the region.
Keeping this all in mind, CSR Team of GEMS Pvt. Ltd has initiated the distribution of bulk food was done in remote areas in Thar deserts, which were hours away from major cities and thus ignored by most other organizations. The residents of these areas were mostly nomads living in mud dwellings, and surviving off their small herds of livestock.
